multi-cultural

By Sabine König 1st year student. Germany

Moving to India, if one has grown up in almost any other place in this world, is a major challenge. I spent quite some time trying to figure out what to expect, what would life be like at KIBI?

There is no such thing as The typical student life at KIBI, because there are many options available. If you are attracted to the library or to the teachings or other projects and activities, it is up to you, there’s plenty with which to get involved. Nevertheless, there are some things that are commonly important to all of us here.

First, the main reason that we are here is, of course, for the teachings. But what is really special about KIBI is that here you study Buddhism rather from the inside than from the outside. You have the rare opportunity to learn from Khenpos who are learned scholars and practitioners at the same time. The same is true for the students. You don’t only study Buddhist scriptures in theory, you also have the opportunity to put them into practice. This is a wholesome and very valuable experience.

The next specialty of KIBI is that it is probably the most multi-cultural place you can go. Just think about it: students from all five continents come together in India to study Tibetan Buddhism ! There is hardly any cultural background that is not represented here. As we live as a small community in the on-site accommodations there is limitless opportunity to share, socialize and learn about and from each others cultures. Thus, for an open minded person looking for intercultural exchange, KIBI becomes a treasury of new experiences and inspirations.

What is the daily life like ? Breakfast at 7.30, lunch at 1.00 and dinner at 7.00. That is the day’s basic schedule, all the classes and activities are placed around it. For those who missed breakfast, there is the coffee-shop which is almost always open, serving daily treats and chocolate cake that has become famous beyond the boundaries of KIBI.

Probably the greatest bliss of daily life is the giant park right across the road. It gives us the freshest air in all Delhi and a chance for relaxing walks and fun picnics. At nighttime, instead of the sound of honking cars, you hear donkeys and peacocks. Also within easy walking distance are various chai-stalls which offer not only Indian style tea, but also the opportunity to get to know students of the two neighboring management schools. Apart from that, the location in southern Delhi means that we are situated close to the best cinemas and shopping areas in town.
